Body Language

Your body language tells everything
As we all know, there are significant differences between people from different parts of the world. We have different culture, language, music, films, traditions, ceremonies, etc. As a participant of the Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellows Initiative, I have the opportunity to get to know these differences, since in this program there are participants from all around the USA, Europe and Asia.
Besides the outfit and the language there is a feature from which you can get to know the living place of a person at first sight, and that is body language.
Having read the book `Body Language' written by Allan Pease I got to know a little about the way body language can inform us about the living place of a person. First of all, I'd like to mention the way people greet each other. To investigate this you have to behave to be aware of what the term personal space means. People living in crowded areas tend to have much smaller personal space. In a way this is obvious, if you consider that they often travel by public transportation, e.g. crowded metro cars and stuffed buses. Their plots are also smaller most of the times, as well as the houses on them, so they are actually used to being close to other people, whereas for example on farms in the countryside people sometimes live miles from each other.
Next time, when you greet someone, take a good look at the distance the person places himself/herself from you, and try to guess how crowded the area is where he or she lives. With a little practice, you can become an expert of this. :) But beforehand It's best to check what the intentions of the other persons are, because they might take a different posture with a different distance if for example they want to flirt with you or wants to get as far as from you because you are stinking :) But let's suppose, the person is friendly. :)
Apart from these fairly obvious signs, here in Winston-Salem I got to know some sings that have completely different meaning in Europe than what they have in the US. For example this sign.In Europe, this is the sign for saying it's O.K. or that something is perfect. Whereas in the US it's considered a highly obscene sign.
Another funny difference is the way people count on their hands. Europe people start with their thumbs, and continue with the index finger, and so on (European way of counting)In contrast with this, Americans start with the index finger, then the middle finger, the ring finger, the little finger and then the thumb. If anyone knows the explanation for this, I would be really grateful to receive it in a comment.
There are a lot of other body sings, a lot of them telling us the feelings without saying a word. For example the way we place our arms, our legs, our head tells a lot about the attitude we have towards a person. It's quite an interesting thing to have a look at a group of people sitting in a circle. The person at whom the most legs and heads are pointing is in 99% of the cases is the centre of attention. Folded arms in most cases mean resistance, tilting your hand to one side means friendliness, etc. From these signs you can also know if someone is lying or is really honest to you or if someone finds you attractive or not. To summarize, by paying attention to others' pasture and moves you can reveal exciting secrets and surprising feelings, so it's really worth investigating it. And don't forget: be careful when you move, because others might as well know the way to decode your body language!
