Op-ed: The Deterioration of the Constitution

Civil liberties are the basis democracy in the United States. Citizens from other countries look up on us with envy as we practice our freedom of speech, religion, and privacy. And what would our nation become if we began denying these liberties to our own citizens? It would certainly not be the America that we all know and love. Since 9/11, the Patriot Act has been unconstitutionally denying the U.S. citizens their fundamental right to privacy.
It is incomprehensible that the President of the United States is promoting the existence of a law that blatantly violates the rights of citizens outlined in the fourth amendment. The 4th amendment guarantees the right to be protected from unreasonable search and seizure by requiring searches to be preempted by a warrant. Warrants will not be issued unless probable cause exists and the person, place, or thing to be investigated is fully described. However, roving wiretaps, which are investigational techniques legalized for tracking terrorists by the Patriot Act, are an insult and threat to any American citizen who takes their right to privacy seriously.
